Monthly Updates from ILLUMINATION Editorial Team: February 2024
Helpful information summarizing achievements and plans for writers, readers, editors, curators, and administrators
Non-members can read this newsletter on our Substack site or for free using our friend link on Medium. Our publications are diverse and inclusive. New applications to join our publications are via the writer registration portal. Please add your Medium ID or a link to one of your stories. Details are on our master onboarding pack.
Dear writers and readers, Happy February. This month, I decided to write this newsletter from my secondary account on Medium, which I mainly use for publishing and curation activities. For those who don’t know, my main account, including my 2500+ personal stories, is Dr Mehmet Yildiz. The reason I decided to pen this newsletter this weekend is our volunteer editors are exhausted with publishing duties, and giving them this additional task will make their duties even harder.
Last month Aiden (Illumination Gaming) helped us to compile updates, but now he is busy with curating, boost nominations, publishing, media coordination, and moderating our Slack workspace.
I established ILLUMINATION in 2020 as a small publication, but now it has become a massive resource on Medium, contributed by 27,000+ writers. Since last month, around 1000 new writers have joined, and we successfully onboarded them on Slack with the help of volunteer administrators, editors, and moderators. These activities are tedious and time-consuming, requiring a lot of time and effort. We are all volunteers donating our time to maintain this wonderful reading and writing community.
My goal is to help every writer, especially new ones, to build their audience quickly using our large community. In addition with the support of a large number of writers to delight our loyal readers and contribute to the growth of Medium which is a wonderful platform for all of us.
Apart from orchestrating the workload of 149 volunteer editors, as an owner and chief editor, I have multiple roles. As our pubs do not earn income, I have to shoulder support activities daily which consume significant time. For example, as I mentioned in a previous story, I have over 3000 unopened emails and Slack messages which concern me. It is humanly impossible to respond to these inquiries timely. If I cannot get back to you within 24 to 48 hours please contact my backups Aiden (Illumination Gaming), Mike Broadly, DHSc, Lawson Wallace, K. Joseph and InYah, who kindly volunteered to answer urgent inquiries in my absence.
Our loyal readers always appreciate fresh voices, so we introduce new writers when they join us through welcome packs like this. Our writers range from beginners to experts (around 10% beginners), (20% advanced), and (70% in between). We support absolute beginners via Readers Hope, most experience via ILLUMINATION-Curated, and the large group in ILLUMINATION and our specialized pubs. We have a good structure as every level of writers is important for our readers. You can learn the details in each updated guideline below.
Since August 2023, we have updated submission guidelines to align with Medium’s new distribution guidelines. New writers can find them from the following links.

Boost Nominations
As of October 2023, our special publication, ILLUMINATION-Curated, was selected as a boost nominating pub. In addition, Aiden’s popular pub, ILLUMINATION Gaming, is now part of the boost program. Aiden and I, with support from other editors, spend several hours daily to find exceptional pieces for nomination.
Recently, editors interviewed me on our boost nomination approach. We hope the script of this interview can guide you. How ILLUMINATION Publications Support the BOOST Program
Our team features boosted stories weekly. The most recent one was sent by Aiden (Illumination Gaming) earlier. This is an excellent resource for writers and a curated collection for our readers, particularly Friends of Medium, who ask for such content.
Weekly Update: Boosted Stories on ILLUMINATION-Curated (11–18 Feb, 2024)
I also link to previously boosted pieces for new readers and aspiring writers as examples of exceptional storiesmedium.com
Boost Education
Last year I created a comprehensive checklist to increase the chance of boosting especially for new writers . This checklist will be helpful for all writers to enhance the quality of their stories.
I also published an important article addressing the most commonly asked question about increasing income from writing on Medium and other platforms based on my decades of content development and marketing experience to guide aspiring writers.
Aiden started an education series by analyzing boosted stories of accomplished writers with a high acceptance rate. You can learn the patterns from his updates. Here is the latest one featuring Dr Joan Naidorf.

Why I Upgraded Our Accounts to Friends of Medium Subscription
I have three publication support accounts and one personal account. I upgraded all of them to Friends of Medium subscriptions to support our readers. Reading from these accounts will allow writers to earn four times more. While curating stories, we read many stories from these accounts, so it will be great for writers. I posted a bulletin in December 2023 titled Why I Became a Friend of Medium. I invited all our readers to become Friends with Medium in a post titled Importance and Value of Medium Friendship for Writers and Readers. In addition, I upgraded my personal account to support our writers, as I read a lot. Here is my story: Celebrating My Reading Anniversary with My Upgraded Subscription to New Medium Friendship.
Our curators Mike Broadly, DHSc and Aiden (Illumination Gaming) also upgraded their subscriptions to contribute to our writers as they read a lot and curate many stories daily. Aiden shared his sentiments:
I Took the Plunge and Became a Friend of Medium (FoM) Yesterday.
Here is why in a humorous tone.
We recently came across something that caught our attention, identified by our publication administrators. Out of the 27,000+ writers supported by my publications on Medium, over 8,000 are currently non-members. We dearly support them as a diverse and inclusive community.
As I pointed out, let’s take a moment to imagine something extraordinary. If these 8,000 writers chose to support the platform by investing just $5 a month, it could significantly boost our collective earnings. This could contribute around $480,000 annually to the pool, a sum that would substantially benefit all writers. Medium Friendship payments will be a bonus to increase writers’ income.
Sharing by Friends of Medium is very important our writers’ visibility an income. Editors interviewed me on how to do that and I guided readers in a story titled How Friends of Medium Can Amplify Important Stories Via Customized Social Media Sites.
New Curation Service to Increase Visibility of Non-Boosted Stories
Out of 148 volunteer editors, a team of 57 volunteer curators developed a new service idea to address the visibility of stories. Each editor nominates a few stories from their reading list daily, and our lead ILLUMINATION-Curators compile them into collections like this one for our readers. But we can only add a limited number of stories to keep these posts in a reasonable size.
Our lead curators include them in lists, a great Medium feature. When you see your stories in lists, you may save them, share them on social media, link to them, comment on them, and like the list for increased visibility. The entire curation process takes up substantial time, so we will appreciate your support as your time allows.
Curated Collections by Aiden (Illumination Gaming)
Aiden created 74 collections. Here is his latest one.

New Communication and Collaboration Platform
Our main communication and collaboration tool is Slack workspace. You can learn about it from this story: An Introduction to ILLUMINATION Slack Workspace. It is free and moderated for our writers.
As some writers cannot join Slack due to limitations, our editor and media coordinator, Aiden (Illumination Gaming), volunteered to set up a new Discord service as an alternative to our main Slack workspace. All registered writers are welcome to join this new platform. Aiden posted an article about it explaining the rules and the way to join it.

Volunteer Editors
After two new members, we now have 149 volunteer publishing and consulting editors.
We will provide stats and updates on ILLUMINATION-Curated in another newsletter, as this publication is now growing rapidly like ILLUMINATION. We also plan to create monthly newsletters for our other 12 pubs, as they all have different audiences and writers. But ILLUMINATION is our flagship pub; therefore, this newsletter is exclusive.
Plans for Handling Massive Workload and Invitation to Support our Substack Subscription Library
The demands on our team, encompassing editing, publishing, curating, and administrative tasks within Slack, have reached an unmanageable level for our dedicated volunteers. In response, I am actively exploring avenues for securing funding to bring on at least one full-time administrator. This strategic move aims to alleviate the workload on our volunteers effectively.
In an effort to involve our community and share the responsibility, I want to obtain support from our Substack subscribers, including writers and readers using our free services. We also plan to provide free curation service using Subtack to support our writers and delight our readers, especially Friends of Medium, who pay extra for their Medium subscription.
How to support our growing community via Substack
I would like to extend an invitation to a Substack pledge from those who can afford it to support the continuity of our free services and the sustainability of our supportive community. I will provide more details about this initiative in an upcoming bulletin. With no announcement yet, we received four kind pledges on Subtack for last month, and we are sending our appreciation and gratitude to these caring supporters.
Our newsletters will always be free but we plan to provide premium content in the future to support paid members. It is called Illumination Writing Academy which we will introduce in upcoming newsletters with details.
Here is how pledge looks like on Subtack.
Our Focus on Quality
Last month I set the strategy of our publications for 2024. You may read the details as I provide helpful info about our plans.
Strategic Changes on Medium in 2023: How I Adapted to the New Strategy
Insights into the unconventional approaches through my evolution as a writer, editor, boost nominator, and publisher…
I also shared my personal strategy as a writer, publisher, curator, and editor for 2024 and 2025.
As we grow, quality and meaningful engagement are the most important factors for making our stories visible. Here are some key points to remember:
We prioritize well-written articles free of language errors or image issues. Stories with errors may take longer to be published.
To give every writer a fair chance, we accept only one story per writer within 24 hours. However, you can submit additional stories to our smaller publications tailored to different audiences.
If your story does not fit the Illumination scope, editors might ask you to move it to a more suitable publication to ensure our readers receive the best content.
Writers who don’t follow our publication rules may experience delays in publishing while issues are resolved via private messages. Due to timezone differences, this process may take several days. To expedite publishing, please consider using our complimentary Slack workspace.
By the way we don’t reject stories. We only return them for updates or transferring to a relevant pub. Recently some writers contact me saying their stories are removed from ILLUMINATION. I noticed that it is bug. We don’t remove published stories unless there is a serious issue like harmful content. Even for that we leave a private message. So please don’t panick and let me know when this happen. I will guide you.
Bots, Scam, and Spam Accounts on Medium
There is a significant increase in harmful accounts contaminating the platform. I shared my perspectives in an article titled Scam and Spam Accounts on Medium Are As Bad As Hate Speech and Defamation for Writers. We know that Medium works hard to fight against that, but recently, they cloned many writers. Here is an example.
As they cloned our other editors and writers, we posted another bulletin to inform the community and invite them to vigilance. Please review this bulletin and share it with your friends. We give a friendlink so that everyone can read on the Internet.
In late September, we received numerous inquiries from our writers expressing concern about a notable decrease in earnings despite consistent stats. While some speculate it might be a system glitch or a depletion of Medium’s funds, the exact cause was finally identified.
We heard that some writers were compensated, delighting them. One of our editors Mike Broadly documented the issue regarding income loss, giving us valuable perspectives on the situation. Here’s What Seems to Happen to Medium Last Week. Let’s protect the platform from abuse collectively.
We acknowledge the concerns raised by many writers regarding this drop. However, we want to emphasize that while monetary aspects are significant, Medium offers writers a range of benefits beyond just income.
In response to the situation, our editorial team has posted a story guiding writers through these changes. We encourage you to read this story, where we transparently share our position as editors.

Writer Bios in a Collection — Introduce Yourself
If you are a new writer, introducing yourself to the community can bring many benefits to you, as we explained before. I have shared six compelling reasons why every writer should create a bio on Medium in 2020.
From the beginning, I have encouraged our writers to share personal bios in their stories. These bios have been curated and shared with our subscribers, allowing readers to get to know the writers better. However, as the number of bios grew, it became challenging to manage them all.
To address this, Aiden (Illumination Gaming) has reorganized these bios into a shorter and more manageable format. We understand that our readers are keen to learn about the writers they follow, so you can explore these updated bios in our new collection.

If you are interested in earning some cash and increasing your email marketing skills, you may check an opportunity introduced by Aiden step by step in an article. He also created a YouTube video about it with clear instructions.
Practical Guidance for Absolute Beginners
1 — How to submit your stories to publications
Now that you have joined Medium and written your first story, Please follow these simple instructions. Once you do it a few times, it will be second nature. Not knowing this feature caused many new writers to wait for days.
When you draft your story, please click on the … (3 dots) on the top right side of your screen. Click on the add to publication, choose Illumination or other relevant pubs, and submit your story. When the story arrives in the publication queue, editors will review and publish it if your story qualifies. If not, they will leave a private message and return your story to fix, resubmit, or transfer to one of our other publications if it does not suit ILLUMINATION.
We no longer publish certain types of stories on ILLUMINATION and ILLUMINATION-Curated, so please review the new submission guidelines.
2 — Use Copyright-Free Images and Remember to Caption Them
A crucial issue is some new writers forget to add captions to photos and use copyrighted images. Violating copyright rules can lead to substantial penalties imposed by legal institutions.
Several writers got hefty fines; our editors don’t want this to happen to you. Therefore, our editors are diligently working to safeguard our writers. We kindly ask that you honor their requests, as they have your best interests at heart. You cannot use every image on stories behind the paywall.
If you are a new writer on Medium, please review the Photo Handling Policy before starting, as it is the most time-consuming issue for our editors and causes delays in publishing. Writers failing to meet our photo handling policy will be removed from publications.
Here’s How to Handle Story Photos on Medium.
Publication policy for the writers of Illumination Integrated Publications on Medium.
3 — We don’t accept AI-generated content per Medium’s new strategy except for one dedicated publication [the Lampshade of ILLUMINATION]
Our publications do not accept content written by artificial intelligence tools, but we have a viable solution to make writers and readers happy.
Those writers who use generative AI tools like Jasper or ChatGPT can send their stories to our new publication, the Lampshade of ILLUMINATION. Details are in this story: AI-Generated Content Policy for ILLUMINATION Integrated Publications.
Essential Resources for New Writers
We compiled essential guides for new writers in a post titled Starter Kit for Writers of ILLUMINATION Integrated Publications. This collection might be a one-stop shop for new writers to learn more about writing on this platform. Please also review these guiding policies before submitting their stories. We need more volunteer editors.
Our editorial team sometimes gets exhausted. Therefore, we need more volunteer editors as our publications keep growing. Some editors go on vacation, some need a break, or sometimes they get unwell.
If you have time and are interested in supporting our smaller publications as an editor, you may contact me on our Slack workspace. The eligibility criteria to serve as an editor for our publications are outlined in this article.
Our Slack group is open to all our contributors. We have around 20K+ members on Slack. If you don’t have access to Slack or haven’t received the previous invitation, you can request it via this online web form.
Editors play a vital role in our writers’ success and our readers’ satisfaction. They review your content, publish it on time, and promote published stories to our readers using various methods.
These volunteer editors are also writers. Therefore, they understand the needs of writers. Currently, 149 volunteer editors support our 27K+ writers using the Slack workspace. This is a massive workload for them.
We thought that meeting our editors could be valuable for writers. Therefore, we started an initiative to introduce our editors’ backgrounds and writing styles. We add new editor profiles as our time allows. They usually use the same account on Slack so that you can contact them directly.
Writing Challenges and Prompts
Several writers completed writing challenges. The 100-Day Writing Challenge is popular. A few writers attempted to 1000 short forms in 100 days, too. If you are into short forms, you can submit one to each publication. However, our focus is not on quantity but quality now.
You may consider sharing your story links, concerns, and aspirations in this unique challenge. Many readers enjoyed the Challenge called “The Proust Questionnaire.”
These challenges might bring new readers to your stories. We look forward to reading your stories about these challenges. We also feature those who complete challenges in our curated collections.
